Regis University's Center for Counseling, Family and Play Therapy offers low-cost/free in-person counseling, family therapy and play therapy for people in the local Denver Metro community. We also offer low-cost/free online therapy to anyone in the state of Colorado. We provide culturally competent and affirming care to a wide variety of clients; everyone is welcome and no insurance is required. We create a safe space where we can help you resolve issues, improve your problem-solving skills and develop better communication skills.

What Services do you offer?

Individual Counseling

Counselors work one-on-one to help you deal with a variety of challenges such as anger, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, parenting problems, school difficulties, career changes and many other issues. Our counselors create a safe and welcoming environment for affirming therapy practices that are open to everyone.

Family Therapy

Common issues addressed in family therapy include concerns around parenting, sibling conflict, loss of family members, new members entering the family, dealing with change and much more. Family therapy can take different forms, from all-family sessions to smaller group or individual work. Families of all shapes and sizes are welcome.

Couples and Relationship Therapy

Couples and Relationship counseling can help you and your partner resolve conflicts, heal wounds, improve communication, develop problem-solving strategies and re-establish common goals. All forms of couples and partnerships are welcome at our clinic, including same-sex and non-binary partnerships.

Child Play Therapy

Counselors can use play to help their clients, most often children, express themselves and resolve their problems. Many mental health agencies, schools, hospitals and private practitioners use play therapy as a primary intervention or as supportive therapy for behavioral problems such as anger management, grief and loss, divorce, abandonment and crisis and trauma.

We do not provide crisis counseling or suicide prevention counseling. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please:

Online or In Person?

If you are a Colorado resident, you can access all of our services online or in person, depending on your needs. For clients living in the Thornton area, our Tech Assistance Program can loan you an iPad and mobile WiFi hotspot for teletherapy sessions. If you prefer in-person sessions, our Counseling, Family and Play Therapy Center in Thornton provides state-of-the-art facilities featuring non-intrusive audio and video equipment that foster an interactive learning model with real-time supervision and feedback, which helps our therapists enhance their clinical skills.

How much will it cost?

The maximum fee for our services is $30, but we offer a sliding scale for our clients who can’t afford the $30 fee. We are proud to provide mental health services to our community, and no client is turned away because of inability to pay. Clients receiving couples or family therapy are charged as one client. Clients who bring multiple family members to individual sessions are given a special family rate. Due to our low-cost/free model, we do not accept any insurance. Medicaid/Medicare recipients receive our services at no cost.

Clients will be billed for the services provided via online payment method. If this is an issue please discuss payment with your provider.

What should I expect?

Whether you work with us online or in person, your sessions will be led by a therapist-in-training who is supervised by one of our 16 licensed clinical therapist supervisors. You will work with your dedicated mental health professional every week for an average of 14 weeks. All therapy sessions are subject to confidential video recording so your counselor and their highly qualified, licensed therapist supervisor can evaluate your counselor’s skill and progress. This helps our therapists-in-training hone their existing clinical skills as they help you achieve your therapy goals.

The Therapy Process is as Simple as 1, 2, 3

1: Enrollment

When you schedule your first appointment, our staff will contact you to walk you through our enrollment process. At this point, our goal is to better understand your mental health goals and match you with your therapist. Enrollment is not a therapy session, we just want to make sure that we are a good fit for your needs. If we are able to serve you immediately, you will hear from your therapist within a week and will be asked to complete paperwork.

2: Meet Your Therapist

Therapy begins with introductions and a review of our policies. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes, and your therapist will take the time to understand your unique needs and therapy goals. You and your therapist will work together to plan your treatment and co-create the path toward healing that will be most beneficial for you.

3: Work, Learn and Grow

All therapists follow models of treatment proven to be effective by current research in the field of psychotherapy. Each session begins with a review of your progress, as well as time to share personal feedback generated from previous sessions. We hope that you will come away from therapy with the tools and confidence you need to face life's challenges and enhance your everyday well-being.
